Saina mania grips shuttle-happy GenY
After sweeping the title of the Indian Open Grand Prix and Singapore Open Super Series, Saina Nehwal, the poster girl of Indian badminton, continued with her irresistible form and won the third title of the Indonesian Open Super Series recently. This victory ranks her as the World No. 3 and makes India’s youngest shuttler the hottest inspirational icon for city teenagers.
“She has made India proud and is the best thing to happen to the country in this decade. Her attitude towards the game and her concentration is really impressive. She knows her goal and plays accordingly. She is also not among those who want to grab media attention. Even though the media didn’t give her much encouragement, over the years she kept on marching forward,” says Anubhooti Sharma, a Class 12 student.
Seconds Devika Singh, a first year student, Hindu College, “Well, there are very few people from India, especially women, to hold such a high position in the international sporting arena. It’s commendable, especially in India where people are fond of other sports like football and cricket. Achieving such titles at this age not only boosts the confidence of the youth, but also increases the importance of badminton in the country.”
Khushi Aggarwal, a student, says, “Being a badminton player, Saina’s achievements make me feel that nothing is impossible. It makes me passionate and confident about excelling in this sport.”
Besides Saina’s game, many also follow her style statement. Megha Shah, a fan of Saina, says, “I love her tri-colour hairclips. It looks really trendy.”
