Rickshaw ride to raise funds
What brings travel enthusiasts Laura, Carina and Sunita together? A nine-day rickshaw journey! On March 9, the trio will start from Delhi to Mumbai, travel over 1,500 km spanning five states and will meet ordinary women doing extraordinary things en route.
The Red Rickshaw Revolution aims to celebrate the achievements of these inspirational women and raise funds for three NGOs, which are working towards empowering women.
Laura Turkington, director, Vodafone Foundation in India tells us, “The Red Rickshaw Revolution started from a small concept of riding a rickshaw around to meet some of the amazing women in India who have been working selflessly for social good. The idea is to meet these women and tell their story to the world.”
“Not many people know the incredible work that several women are doing at grass root level, altruistically for social good. This campaign will help highlight achievements of women who have accomplished extraordinary feat. I am very excited to be a part of this campaign,” said Sunita Chaudhary, India’s first female rickshaw driver.
The team has identified the key women they will be meeting. They are from diverse fields, working towards women empowerment, education and children, health and disability, environment, social welfare, etc. “I love travelling. I am super excited to be driving a rickshaw and meeting these amazing unknown and unsung women of India,” says Laura.
Sunita, who has encountered various difficulties in life, adds, “Just like the uneven road that we are going to take, life throws us on uneven roads and we need to make a choice and be selfless.”
