The return of the Roja girl

She is popularly known as the Roja girl and many still remember her performances in Mani Ratnam’s Roja and Shankar’s debut film, Gentleman. It’s nearly 17 years after a self-imposed sabbatical that she will now star in a Tamil film once more, director Lakshmy Ramakrishnan (of Aarohanam fame) having signed Madhoo up for her second film. In an exclusive interview Madhoo opens up about how much she enjoyed being a lady of leisure for more than a decade.
Although it’s been long since Madhoo worked in a Tamil film, she has had quite a few outings in Hindi recently. “I did few a pieces in Hindi, but unfortunately, those didn’t garner a lot of attention. In spite of being a full-time family person, I have been keeping in touch with cinema as much as I could,” says Madhoo.
Motherhood must be a full-time job. “I truly enjoy being a family person. It comes naturally to me. I totally love taking care of my children and spending time with them,” she says. At the same time, Madhoo admits that she missed the high of doing a good role or being a part of a great film. “I found it hard not to work. I did a Telugu film recently. The 10- day shoot that I did for that film was an unforgettable experience” she says.
Apart from her association with Lakshmy Ramakrishnan’s second project, Madhoo is not saying much more about other future projects in Tamil. She nurses the ambition of working with Mani Ratnam again. “When I worked with him on Roja, I didn’t realise that I was working with a legendary director. If I am still called the Roja girl, that’s because of him. Now, I would love to work with him again as an actor with greater awareness than I had, and one who acknowledges the fact that he is a great filmmaker,” says Madhoo.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
