A Reelistic walk to remember

It is raining stars in fashion shows across the country; Shah Rukh Khan and Deepika Padukone walked the ramp recently for the Delhi Couture Week and so have Saif and Kareena Kapoor at the HDIL Couture Week. Priyanka Chopra, Akshay Kumar, Sonakshi Sinha and a bevy of other stars have all joined the bandwagon of iconic B-town personalities to do their part for the fashion scene.
The age of Bollywood superstars sauntering across the runway is not something unheard off. Truly, their magnetic persona matches none, but does their star status sometimes overshadow the collection? Model Arry Dabas, who has sashayed the runway for many designers, criticises the Indian market viewpoint for this trend, “A model does not enjoy the status symbol of a star hence designers employ celebs to popularise their show.” He adds that, models have a limited crowd pulling capacity. “I believe models do more justice to the designer than the stars,” he justifies.
Designer Anita Dongre, feels having a celeb onboard enhances the overall effect, “It is important that the celebrity shares a synergy with your brand and exhibits the brand philosophy on the ramp.” On having Aditi Rao as the showstopper for her brand she enumerates that, “I felt she perfectly represented the collection, as besides being gorgeous she also symbolises the new-age India. She is young, fun, vibrant and everything else that my collection stands for.” Kabir Singh, a model who has been the top pick for designers across the country, retaliates that stars should stick to B-town because that is what they are trained at. “Carrying a garment is not that simple and just iconic status is not enough to do that. Sometimes it is more about promoting their movies than emphasising the collections,” he opines.
Designer Narendra Kumar one of the few fashion designers who is a model loyalist, confidently says that, “My clothes are the stars of my show; I do not need to add any entertainment element.” However, he says that he has used celebs for his runway shows if they fit the role. “John once sauntered the ramp for my bridal collection and I think he carried it off well. When they are on the ramp, they should be models not the stars,” he winds up.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
