This year Santa Claus is going to look gorgeous. The paunch will be replaced by a sexy figure, socks will be pulled down shapely legs, and the white beard will go for a toss. The pretty face with goodie bag is going to take rounds as Santa Claus is getting hotter than ever before thanks to women donning the Santa avatar this season.

“Everyone thinks that only a man can turn into Santa. But this is soon going to be changed as women are also putting on the red-hot long Santa fur cap to play Santa,” says Divya Modi, a housewife who has been playing Santa for a few years now. She adds, “I started playing Santa to keep the festival spirit alive but the first time I entered the Christmas party in Santa Claus dress, everyone was both stunned and excited. It was a memorable experience to give away goodies to everyone and I decided that I wanted to do the same every year,” says Divya.
It seems the time has come for Santa to get a makeover. And Veronica Stratis, a student, is planning to do the needful. “I wanted to play Santa for a long time. But this year I am all geared up. But I will not be wearing the actual costume. Rather I am planning to wear a short red dress with Santa cap for the Christmas party at home. After all, if a woman is playing Santa there has to be some interesting feminine twist to it,” smiles Veronica.
While Veronica is all set to make red-hot Santa hotter than ever before, Ellina insists that Santa looks best in conventional dress only. And not just the costume but also his laugh is what she plans to retain when Ellina will be dressing up as Santa this Christmas eve at the launch of Maddox, Lounge Café, in the city. “I have always loved Santa and immediately said yes when I was asked to play a Santa. But now I realise it’s not easy playing a Santa. Now as the festival is coming closer I am realising the tough task he performs. I have been practising his laugh and how he is supposed to talk,” says Ellina.
Riya Rozario, who plays Santa every year at a play school where she teaches, says that it’s a change to see women playing Santa.
“It has always been a norm that only men can play Santa Claus. But Santa is all about love and warmth and I believe the role suits women all the more,” says Riya.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
