The epic tale of love, betrayal and courage — The Ramayana — is being revisited yet again for the TV audience. Ramanand Sagar group that made the epic popular among the masses with the TV series in the 90s is back with it once again.

Meenakshi Sagar, the grand daughter of Ramanand Sagar, was in the capital recently with the cast of the new version of Ramayana that will be aired on Zee TV, to launch the show.
Meenakshi says that the epic is as important in today’s time as it was back in the 90s. She says her team has worked on the show to make the new version of the epic alluring for the younger generation. “We have simplified the language. Instead of Sanskrit words, more of Hindi language has been used. The looks are much better. Even in terms of special effects, the show is going to be better,” she says, and adds that they have tried to etch out the character sketch in a better way than before.
Shikha Swaroop, who is portraying the character of Kaikeyi, thinks that it’s important for today’s generation to understand the importance of our mythology. She says that she understood the depth of Kaikeyi’s character only after she was chosen to play the part and she read about it in detail. “Kaikeyi’s life defines the life of almost every women. I think every woman experiences the phases that Kaikeyi did. After being a great daughter, wife and mother, she got carried away by the negative emotions,” she says.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
