Priya has her platter full

At a time when most Tamil films seem to be featuring actresses from North India, Priya Anand’s career worked itself out the other way round. This south Indian actress has managed to successfully move to Bollywood with films like English Vinglish, Rangrezz and Fukrey, without forgetting to still be a part of interesting films in the south. The actress, who has now managed to dub in four languages, says she enjoys every bit of the filmmaking process. Priya says, “I initially got into films wanting to be a part of the technical side. But when I became an actress, I realised that I was actually interested in even the nitty gritty of the filmmaking process which makes me more patient as an actress.”
Fukrey, where she played a Delhi girl, was shot entirely in sync sound where the actors had to record their dialogues live. She, as a Chennai-born girl, did not have any problems with the live recording, she says, “It was a great experience. I had to work hard to perfect my accent, but it was surely worth the effort, and it is, of course, something I’ve learnt which I can use throughout my life.”
When shifting between cities, languages and working styles of the various film industries, she notices all that differentiates one from the other. Promotions in Tamil and Telugu last only a few days whereas in the north, it is a more planned, elaborate process which takes longer, with more cities included. “When we were working on the promotions for Fukrey, I noticed that the producers (Farhan Akthar’s Excel Entertainment) had the promotional tour planned to the very last detail. It is also not just about meeting interesting people, they have so many quirky, creative and interesting things that they come up with which makes promotional tours so much fun. Promotions are a part of my job and I enjoy it just as much as a day on the sets of a film,” she says.
The actress, who will soon be seen in Vanakam Chennai, with Shiva, and with Vikram Prabhu in Arima Nambi, says that she is in a phase of her life where she wants to work all 30 days in the month. These films apart, she has also signed two films with AGS Entertainment and in one of those, she will be seen opposite Gautham Karthik. “I’m really excited about what I have on my plate right now, and in each of the new films I’ve signed you will see a different me,” she states.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
