A pretty perfect room

Designer Isha Kapoor of the designer duo Kartikeya and Isha from Dozakh, got married this summer to a real estate entrepreneur. Initially, like most brides-to-be, the thought of moving into a new house and family after marriage made her nervous.
However, she took that fear in her stride and with the help of her interior designer sister, decided to design her bedroom according to her choice and preferences. She kept the décor of her room in sync with the rest of the house. But she had only a month to design and complete the room.
“Everything happened too quickly. I got engaged and then the marriage date that was fixed was only two months away. My sister and I worked out the details — the colours my husband and I like, the look of the room, designing of the walk-in wardrobe,” says Isha.
The room has wallpapers with floral prints in metallic grey and the furniture is upholstered in shades of purple that create a dramatic contrast. Different parts of the room, like the corners and the focal wall, have been decorated in different styles. While one corner has the couple’s picture and some paintings that give the feel of old European country houses, the focal wall has a mirror with a few candlestands that add a contemporary touch to the room.
Isha says she has tried to incorporate as much of her design sensibilities as she could in a small room. “It was difficult to put in everything I like. But I’m happy and comfortable with the décor,” she says.
The rest of the house, Isha says, has been decorated by her mom-in-law, who takes keen interest in paintings and artefacts. It’s been more than seven years that the family has been living in this south Delhi home. “My in-laws are avid travellers. They have travelled across the world and collected interesting art pieces and artefacts from everywhere. Some of them have been decorated in different areas of the house while others are taken out as and when needed,” says Isha.
Almost seven months in the house, she is enjoying every bit of managing the house thoroughly. “Adding to the decor of the house, making sure that even the corners are clean and add to the look of the house and shopping for it is such a feel-good factor,” she says.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
