Planning online
Few would disagree with the claim that a wedding is the ultimate social event — a day many have spent their whole lives dreaming of, one that involves love, commitment and most important of all, lots and lots of planning. While the first two still remain the same, the planning part, thankfully, has become easier now.
Social media websites such as Facebook, Pinterest, Lover.ly, and a host of wedding-related blogs are coming to the rescue of brides, and even metrosexual, meticulous grooms, in choosing the right wedding planners, designers, photographers and various other vendors.
Brides-to-be are also using such websites to share ideas and get recommendations from other potential brides as well as married women who have been there, done that. “We’ve always known brides are turning to the Internet to help plan their perfect wedding, and by doing a survey, we wanted to find out how they’re musing the rise of social media as they plan,” says Carley Roney, editor-in-chief of TheKnot.com, which along with Mashable, conducted a survey to ascertain the level of dependence on social media for their marriages.
The results were quite surprising. It came to light that about one in ten brides update their Facebook relationship statuses within minutes of their marriages becoming official. Also, more than 50% use Facebook and Twitter to share everything about their big day.
Of course, updating on such websites also leaves the awkward situation of sharing details and photos of the wedding with the ones who aren’t invited. While it can be really awkward at times, the evolving technological influence on wedding plans seems to be creating broader wedding etiquette.
Mashable also reports that while about 40% of brides prefer their official wedding photo to be posted first, the remaining 60% do not mind if the guests post wedding photos on Facebook and Twitter.
