Pinky’s East West connect

The journey from Jaipur to Los Angeles was not an easy one for model-turned-actor Pinky Campbell, but she never gave up. Pinky, who has worked in Hollywood films like An American Carol, Spread and Group Sex along with television shows like How I Met Your Mother, My Boys, Numbers, Greek, Swingtown and True Blood, has already bagged a few meaty roles in Bollywood. She reveals more about her hopes and aspirations in the glam industry.

Pinky, who is shooting for Vikram Bhatt’s next, reveals, “Vikram has seen my past work and he was impressed by it. So he approached me for his next film and that’s what I am here in India for. I was on vacation here and I was offered to meet big filmmakers so I spoke to my agent and he liked the idea of me working here. I am an actor and I can get into any character’s skin but I would like to play a character that nobody has played yet.”
Pinky also mentions that she is a huge fan of Prakash Jha and she would like to work with him some day. She says, “There are so many new talented directors now and I am happy to see such a change. I am a huge fan of Prakash Jha and the Bhatts, Anurag Kashyap, Gauri Shinde and many more. Mr Amitabh Bachchan is my favourite actor.”
Usually, Indian origin actors in Hollywood get typecast roles, but for Pinky, who will be shooting for True Blood and CSI as a guest star soon, it was a different experience. She says, “Many Indian actors have that problem in Hollywood but I have never been cast as an Indian girl. My accent was a problem initially but after learning English later in my life, I never had that typical Indian accent, and now I can do many accents like English, French, Italian, and American. But I hope they cast me as an Indian girl. There are more roles for Indians than ever.”
Talking about the professional culture in the Indian and Western film industry, Pinky says, “Technically there is a huge difference. There are more laws in Hollywood than in Bollywood. People cannot cheat you easily in Hollywood. All character actors are respected in Hollywood tremendously. And the truth of this entertainment industry, either it’s Hollywood or Bollywood, it’s all about whom you know and being at the right place at the right time. I will continue working in Hollywood and as far as Bollywood is concerned, it has to be a damn cool thing to work for. But ideally, I want to work in both the places.”

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
