Pedalling to strike chord with youth
He has never owned a car or a motorbike. It has always been bicycles for Srinivasa Chowdary Alluri, to school, college and work. Even when he found a software job in London, he cycled his way to office and back. He once rode from London to New Delhi, covering 11,350 km spread over 109 days.
That long trip, however, was for a cause. For saving Mother Earth and humanity. Srinivasa was troubled by what he saw around him — youngsters leading irresponsible lives, wasting the resources they were blessed with; while in another part of the world people suffered from illnesses brought by poverty.
He founded Manavata, a non-profitable organisation for the development of the society, in 1991. In the years that followed, Srinivasa rode his cycle to all corners of India, his latest one being from Mumbai to Kanyakumari in December 2012. “I cycled carrying four pannier bags. Young volunteers joined me on the way and rode with me till the end, carrying with them messages to save Earth and create a healthy and harmonious world,” says Srinivasa, who is now an IT entrepreneur.
‘Cycling For Humanity 2012’ — that’s what the recent trip was called — saw him packing with him bags of tents and kitchen utensils, ready-to-cook food items, and making a home for the night anywhere along the way.
