Online confessions soothe guilt pangs

Now, not only can you confess your deepest, darkest sins online, but you also get to keep your identity anonymous. A social network Clearmyguilt.com is helping many confess their sins or acts anonymously, thereby avoiding hurting one’s reputation while ridding one of feelings of guilt. Another interesting feature of the site is that it allows fellow users to rate the sins as ‘forgiveable’ or ‘unforgiveable’ in the online forum.
Many youngsters find the concept of confessing online interesting, and some feel it would be therapeutic.
IT professional Tanvir Ahmed finds confessing online interesting. He says, “It will relieve me of all the long-suppressed stuff I have been carrying inside me. There are several things that I would never share with anyone. Perhaps after confessing online I may not feel the weight of those regrets and my little sins, it will be comforting for sure and the best thing is the assured anonymity.”
However, online evangelist Prateik Shah avers, “Confessing one’s guilt can help many people feel good, and it is indeed nice to see a website help people absolve themselves of their sins by just posting it online. What bothers me though is the fact that the sins will be rated and may be deemed unforgivable if so decided by the people. While that will create a good example for others, it could lead to severe ramifications for the one who confessed.”
Even though confession is not mandatory in most religion, Upasna Lall, senior manager marketing and communication with a private firm, feels it is essential to live life freely. “Confessing takes the load off one’s chest. It’s a good way to speak out without worrying about anyone’s reaction. As far as rating the sins is concerned, I am not sure if people from different countries would be able to rate it right. They may not understand the cultural differences and so may not always be fair in their verdict.”
But there are those who’d prefer to share their secrets with a friend. Says media consultant Pallavi Walia, “I am shameless when it comes to confessing a secret. Even if I have the worst possible thing to say, I have few people who I can count on. And seriously, what’s the fun if you can’t share your darkest secret with atleast one person who can react? I would never confess my secrets in the virtual world.”

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
