Nonsensical Metro video goes viral

Sometimes technology can bolster the silliest of songs or videos to reach the ā€œmost popularā€ category overnight. The recent flash mob dancing video at CST, Mumbai, was no doubt inspirational. But within a few days of its release, a video titled Hamra Delhi ke metro ghuma da is out on YouTube, which is being promoted as Delhiā€™s answer to the flash mob video. As crazy as it gets, the video is spreading like a wild fire on social networking sites and the viewers are having a good laugh on the asinine song that revolves around Delhi Metro.
With a Metro train standing in the backdrop and two funny female side dancers, the main singer in this video is singing in a croaking voice and dancing like a puppet. Shruti Sharma, a DU student says, ā€œWhen I saw this video for the first time I was totally flabbergasted. I thought it is some spoof video of a vernacular album. The main singer is singing and dancing in the most atrocious manner, but the song is still getting popular on social networking sites. People are just watching it for fun and sharing it with friends as a joke.ā€
For some youngsters this video is too ā€˜hilarious,ā€™ whereas the rest are simply calling it a gimmick. Sarthak Kush, a guitarist and college student, says, ā€œSongs like these get popular on YouTube because they have a non-sense value. Some people watch such stupid stuff to have fun and then they pass it on. It is nothing but a gimmick, because the government or any political party wonā€™t come up with such brainless lyrics.ā€
Agrees Pranav Mehra, a B.Com student at DU, adding that in the age of Internet anything and everything can get popular. He says, ā€œPeople want to see something different all the time. From time to time we see such dim-witted videos cropping up, which incidentally have a very short popularity span. I donā€™t understand why they are comparing it to Mumbaiā€™s flash mob video. This video about Delhi Metro is completely out of track and looks very crass.ā€

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapurā€™s Bandit Queen didnā€™t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karunā€™s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
