‘Nonsense’, but still clean

The lyrics are clean, the song is an instant hit and the video is an absolute delight. The latest Bollywood rage is Badtameez Dil from Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani.

Director Ayan Mukherjee couldn’t be happier that his film’s first song is a big hit. “We did expect Badtameez Dil to do well, but the fact that it became an instant rage feels good. Pritam’s music and Remo’s choreography have ensured that the song is a chartbuster.”
Says DJ Piyush, “The strengths of the song are definitely its lyrics and choreography. It has borrowed punchlines from retro Bollywood tracks. The song is reminiscent of the old Yeh Jawani Hai Deewani track which featured Randhir Kapoor.”
“The reason people love Bollywood music is because it comes with drama. Fans don’t want to dance freestyle, they want to do the steps done in the original track,” he adds.
Choreographed by Remo D’Souza, Badtameez Dil took more than five days to make. The choreographer says he prefers “clean songs” to item number. “When I have to choreograph an item number, I don’t have to worry about the script or the actor. I can go crazy on the creativity front. But with songs like Badtameez Dil, I have to consider the character, the storyline and see if the character can dance the way I want to. Having said that, I must admit, I like working on songs like these over item numbers,” says Remo.
Echoing Remo’s point on the importance of actors dancing to the tunes is Ashima Chibber, a filmmaker who has worked on two songs from the Dabangg series says, “Songs are always fun to shoot, notwithstanding the fact if they are item numbers or just peppy tracks. From a film-makers point of view, the actors , who are dancing in the video are extremely important.” Ashima is also of the opinion, “Songs from movies like Zindagi Na Milegi... and Rockstar have done well even with clean content. But item numbers are necessary evil. Even women find them titillating. And one can’t always blame the film-makers for this trend.”
With this clean break in the Bollywood music charts, the question is will the ‘badtameez dil’ of the audience continue to support clean entertainment or go for the item formula......

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
