No sequel for Kamal
The tinsel town is abuzz that Sadma, the 1983 timeless cult classic which starred Kamal Haasan and Sridevi with the evergreen music composed by maestro Ilayaraja will see a sequel to it soon.
Almost three decades later the makers of Sadma, a remake of Tamil flick Moondram Pirai which won five national awards for its cinematographer/director Balu Mahendra are toying with the idea of mesmerising Kamal’s fans yet again. Kamal Haasan won several awards along with Sridevi when the film hit the theatres decades back. Sridevi who plays a mentally deranged girl in the film, after her comeback, perhaps, would be open to teaming up with the legendary actor to deliver a hit. Silk Smitha’s oopmh and the song with Kamal was also quite a rage back then. Although there might be takers for the film and the audiences will only be too happy, there seems to be a twist in the tale.
Reportedly Ulaganayagan is not kicked about this idea. He had cited age being a reason for him not being able to recreate the same magic. “There are talks about making a part two of Sadma, where the female protagonist remembers him and comes back, but I don’t think I would fit into the hero’s role anymore. Moreover, a tragedy is ‘best’ left at that, it is a tragedy because she doesn’t return,” he had said in a report. Echoing the same view TG Thyagarajan, the producer of original version Moondram Pirai said, “I also feel that the climax is the best part of the movie which worked wonders. Tampering with it won’t do any good to the movie. Moreover, it needs to be seen whether whoever who is making the sequel would do justice to what Balu Mahendra, Kamal and Sridevi did 30 years ago.”
