No fairytale ending
One fight, a small misunderstanding can break a marriage. It seems like there is no such thing as a happy ending. The much celebrated fairytale wedding of British comedian and actor Russell Brand with singer Katy Perry has gone kaput within 14 months. According to news, Russell called it quits and the couple has filed for divorce on the grounds of irreconcilable differences. Russell and Katy had a lavish wedding in India. This is not just it, singer Sinead O’Connor too recently ended her 16-day marriage to drugs counsellor Barry Herridge as according to her it was like “living in a coffin”. And a decade old marriage of actor Debra Messing and Daniel Zelman too has come to an end.
According to Daily Mail, Russell reportedly decided to end the marriage to pop star wife Katy because of her hard partying ways.
Dr Geetanjali Kumar, psychologist and a marriage therapist believes that emotion is like a cement which binds all relationships. We all look for emotional compatibility in our partner. If emotional needs are not met, it can lead to a break-up. Earlier, it was an acceptance of any relationship, permanence in a marriage was unquestionable. Today, adjustment adaptability is not there.
She adds, “Tolerance levels are very low among couples today. Every marriage has its teething troubles, everyone goes through the time when one has to give into that person, situation. Now we have the concept of nuclear family, previously extended families acted as a buffer in crisis situation. These people were acting as diluters, today financial independence, especially among women has also contributed to them seeking solely companionship in their partners.”
“When a high profile marriage ends, it’s not shocking. Atleast Katy and Russell made it work for a year, ending a 16-day marriage sounds like a joke,” avers HR consultant Nikhila Singh. “Marriage needs commitment, time, and patience. Celebs have other issues to deal with — their profiles, egos, image in the public. Where do have the time for one another.”
These are changing times when the very meaning of relationships has changed. Especially for celebs who lead a hectic lifestyle, there’s neither time, nor place for commitments that ask for even a little bit of flexibility. “What’s even worse is that it’s somehow ‘cool’ to be divorced or not be in a stable relationship these days. Back then, celebs would think twice about their image before ending their marriage, but today, they don’t care. Look at actor Saif Ali Khan who ended his decade long marriage with Amrita Singh despite having two kids, after a brief fling with model Rosa, he has finally found love with Kareena Kapoor,” concludes Vidhi Arora, a consultant with an IAS academy.
