New sounds of new times
Having just released his latest music album for the film Luv U Soniyo, Remo Fernandes, who mourns the death of indie pop, talks about how Bollywood has taken over the country.
“The only album that I am proud of is India Beyond, that was not released by any major record label. It was however released in Miami and a few other places and became quite popular there. The record companies here said that all we want is another Jalwa from you. I knew that they would have just put it up on some shelf and I didn’t want that to happen to this album,” says Fernandes.
According to him, the music today is completely different from what you got to hear a decade ago. “There is a lot of electronic music everywhere, the reason why Goans are not needed anymore. After the British left, the Goans were the only ones who were educated in reading music. Film producers did not know the chords and the notes. Thus the Goans were in demand. Today however, in the age of electronic music, no one needs to read notes, as it is all about the right harmony. Today a Goan has to be talented. I only do songs as a package. Maria Pitache for Luv U Soniyo is one from the package that has already begun to grow in popularity,” continues Remo.
While Bollywood has become the sole place for music, Remo believes that these other forms of music will never get a better platform. “The rule is that you have to be in front of the audience all the time. If you aren’t, then you will be forgotten. India loves to copy and with so many new cultures coming in, it is a little difficult to keep up with the times,” says Remo.
