Model turned actor Rashi Khanna has every reason to smile with her debut film Madras Cafe striking gold at the box office. The actress admits the film has exceeded her expectations and she could not have asked for a better launch in Bolywood. Rashi smiles as she says, “I knew the film would get critical acclaim but it has done very well commercially too, so that’s the icing on the cake. I’m just basking in my glory right now, with all the compliments coming my way.”
The actress though a popular face in commercials says she is still getting used to the fame, the film has given her. “I am at my hometown Delhi to shop for my brother’s wedding and a lot of people on the street recognize me and smile. It’s a nice feeling but I’m still getting used to it as I’m a shy person,” says the actress.
There is still sometime before the actress starts shooting for her next film and she is making the most of her time, spending it with family. She says, “I have been in Mumbai for my film commitments and I miss the winter and yummy food of Delhi. I’m now back with my family for a few days. My brother, who is in the merchant navy, will be coming home for the wedding. My father is into leather business and mom is a retired principal.”
Incidentally Rashi is all set to follow in Ayushmann Khurrana’s footsteps and become Bollywood’s next singer-actor. She reveals, “I am not a trained singer but I have always been interested in it. I used to take part in state level competitions when I was in school. Infact a lot of people have been asking me if I sung Jaise Milein Ajnabi from Madras Cafe but I have not. Shoojit Sircar didn’t give me a chance to sing for my debut so I made him promise to let me sing for my next film, so yes, you will hear me singing soon.”
While it is often said two actresses cannot be friends it doesn’t seem so in Rashi’s case, as she reveals, “I am excited for my friend Vaani Kapoor who makes her debut in Shuddh Desi Romance. She was my only model friend back in Delhi, both of us came to Mumbai together and would audition together. We also got our first ad campaign for the same brand.”
Recalling her journey the actress says, “I did my English Honors from Lady Shri Ram College and I was already modeling back then. I got a job with McCann but I decided to come to Mumbai and try my luck in films, for six months. My parents were supportive but I was apprehensive to come to Mumbai alone. So I came with Vaani and both of us immediately got signed for an ad campaign. Later I auditioned for Madras Cafe and got selected. I will soon start shooting for my next film opposite Ayushmann Khurrana.” Way to go, girl!

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
