Nayanika turns grooming guru

Having ruled the ramp for nearly two decades Nayanika Chatterjee is now donning the role of a mentor. The queen of the ramp who’s groomed models for various beauty pageants such as Sananda Srimati, Sananda Tilottama, Ford Supermodel and Elite and even choreographed shows is launching Nayanika Chatterjee Grooming Academy very soon.
While talking about this venture Nayanika says, “It’s a natural progression from modelling. Over the years I’ve realised that teaching makes me happy and it’s immensely satisfying. It’s a complete process for me and I will do it on my terms, it’s less complicated.”
However, Nayanika is not bidding goodbye to modelling. She says, “I have a choice of taking up modelling assignments and anyhow there aren’t much standalone shows, and I no longer participate in fashion weeks. So this academy comes at a right point in my life where I can devote ample time to it. Also, I’ve realised that teaching comes naturally to me and that I want to deal with my students on a one-to-one basis.”
Describing the courses at the academy, which Nayanika has designed herself she informs, “There are three different categories. First is make-up, which includes; how to do your own make-up, handle the brush. The second category is modelling. Here aspirants will learn how to walk on the ramp, how to pose. Their portfolios will be shot by model-turned-photographer Montu Tomar. The third category is personal grooming. This is meant for aspirants above 18 years and will include — posture, make-up, table setting and manners, personal hygiene etc.”
Nayanika says that the courses are intensive and short-term in nature as the younger generation today wants faster results.
She says, “No more than 10 aspirants in a group. I want to interact with people at a personal level.”
She also states that grooming is an underrated term. “Most people want the bleached look and want to look like a celebrity. Grooming isn’t about emulating someone else. It’s about accepting yourself and being comfortable. There’s fixation in Delhi about being fair and pretty,” she says.
Reiterating the importance of grooming, Nayanika says, “Grooming is an important aspect of one’s personality. Everyone wants to have that extra edge. You may have the qualification, but it’s equally important to know how to present yourself.”
Nayanika reveals that grooming has been an intrinsic part of her growing up years. “My mother was very particular about how we dressed. Whether we ate at the dining table or not, it was always set. My parents liked fine dining hence we were taught how to use fork and knife at a very young age.”

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
