It was with Kahaani that people first noticed his presence on the big screen. Though he has been a part of the Hindi film industry for a long time, Nawazuddin Siddique is now reaping the fruits of his hardwork. He made it big with Gangs of Wasseypur and is currently a hot favourite.

From playing small character roles in New York to a menacing cop in Sujoy Ghosh’s Kahaani, Nawazuddin has finally come into his own. The actor, who always wanted to be an actor, admits that he had to struggle his way to stardom.
“I have been doing small roles in big-budget films for quite sometime now. But it was Kahaani that changed things for me,” says a proud Nawazuddin. He says, “When Sujoy called me for the role, I told him that he may have dialed the wrong person. I wasn’t sure that a director would offer me a power-packed role in a big film like Kahaani,” says Nawazuddin. He is happy that a film like Gangs of Wasseypur came his way. “GOW has opened new avenues for me,” he adds.
After back-to-back hits, Nawazuddin says that he is yet to come to terms with his stardom. “Look I’m not Salman Khan or Ranbir Kapoor. Roles like these might not happen everyday. But I’m willing to wait and experiment,” he adds. Given that the industry promotes newcomers who have a Godfather backing them, Nawazuddin believes that he is among those who have broken the stereotyped notion.
“One can survive without a Godfather. Survival purely depends upon talent. If I have it in me, I’ll make it,” he says without batting an eyelid.
Nawazuddin says that all he is looking forward to play are good roles. “Honestly, I don’t worry so much about money. I am hungry to play good roles and I hope they come my way,” he says.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
