Music that knows no boundaries

It was the sheer love of music that bought them together, and now DJ Anish Sood and VJ Ramona Arena are on a mission to spread the beats across the nation. After collaborating for Wanna be Your Only Love, the duo has now teamed up for ‘Open Your World Tour’, which took place in the capital recently. The young and the beautiful musicians reveal more about their music, style, alternative culture and influences.
DJ Anish Sood, who is known for his house, techno and electro sounds, mentions that his musical journey began when he was just 16 years old. He says, “I started off DJing in high school at 16 and later at college parties that I used to organise myself. One thing led to another and I soon found myself playing in nightclubs when I turned 19. I’ve never had any formal musical training, I learnt from YouTube tutorials and taught myself the piano by ear. I come from a family of musicians, my dad and uncle are both jazz guitarists and having music around the house always helped.”
Speaking about his influences in music, he says, “I keep finding amazing new musicians every day who inspire me on a daily basis. I also draw a lot of inspiration and influence from different countries I travel to. Every city has a unique vibe and I find it very amusing.”
Whereas, his associate, VJ Ramona, mentions that music is a field she didn’t choose, but it chose her. She says, “I sang before I spoke, through school and college I excelled at it, won competitions, my line of work from radio to MTV to live musicals on stage was all music related. I always wanted to be a singer but ironically got too busy with everything else. I decided two years ago that it was way overdue and I probably should focus on doing the one thing I’ve always wanted to. So, here I am today with three singles released in the electronic dance music space with international labels and gearing up for more.”
Ramona feels that her taste in music totally depends on her mood, feelings and mind space. She says, “The training I got was just the basic one schools give, and then I got some proper professional training before doing my musicals Oliver! and Broadway and Beyond. But the important thing is consistency. No matter where you are, what you’re doing and who’s looking, keep singing.”

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
