A museum for Tihar
After being recognised as one of the best examples of jail reforms, Tihar Jail is now planning to set up a museum on its premises that will chronicle the history of the prison.
From the landmark decisions taken about jail reforms to various other activities that have become a part of Tihar, everything will be there at the museum. The museum will narrate the evolution of Tihar Jail.
Law officer and spokesperson, Sunil Gupta, says that they have just conceived the idea. “A lot needs to be done to execute it well. We are planning to go for an extensive work to set up a proper museum that will chronicle things like how Tihar became a platform for many prisoners to lead a respectable life by working at the jail factory or getting involved in one of the many rehab activities. Among other things, it will also showcase the innovative ideas that the inmates came up with to get the banned items inside the jail premises,” he says.
Gupta says that once the work begins, they may take inputs from former officers who have been in-charge of the jail. “Inputs of people who have been associated with the jail in the past will make the museum rich with information. Their first-hand experience will benefit the museum,” he says.
For people who are fascinated with history and culture, find the idea of a jail museum appealing.
Shivani Sharma, a final year college student, who is currently reading about Kiran Bedi and the jail reforms she brought in Tihar, says that she would be one of the first persons to visit the museum once it opens.
“I never thought I’d be interested in knowing about a jail. But after reading about various new initiatives in Tihar, I’m keen to know more about it.”
Management professional Abhishek Sinha, says that after the high profile cases that the jail has handled in the recent past, people have become more curious about the various cells and other departments inside the premises. “I’m really interested in knowing about the treatment the VIPs get there. I’d also like to know how different cells evolved. A VIP cell would have come up only when a high profile case would have been sent there. I’d like to know about all these things and I hope museum will have these informations,” he says.
No one will be disappointed, as the museum will have information about its step-by-step development from the starting days.
“We would not only give the details about how the entire premise has evolved over the years, but also about the services. We’d have info on the evolution of arms and ammunition, dress code and everything else that is of interest,” says Gupta.
