Mother of all myths
There is one sexual myth that has transcended all ages and societies. It is universal and has plagued mankind from time immemorial. Hence, it can be aptly called mother of all myths. It is masturbation.
The word masturbation is derived from the Latin word Masturbari which means, to pollute oneself. Masturbation means the stimulation of the sex organs to obtain pleasure. It may or may not lead to ejaculation or orgasm. Boys as well as girls indulge in it.
Masturbation has always been an epicenter for a plethora of conflicts and misconceptions, arising mainly due to ignorance. This seemingly insignificant sphere of sex breeds inferiority complex, feelings of inadequacy, guilt, depression, withdrawal and anxiety. Even the vaguest and unrelated complaints are attributed to it.
To quote a famous sex researcher — 95 percent of the population masturbates, and the remaining 5 percent are lying! So, nearly everyone masturbates. In fact, it is those people who never masturbated before marriage, have a greater chance of developing sexual dysfunctions.
Our bodies sexually mature between ages 10-15. However, our marriages are being delayed. Can nature keep quiet between physical maturity and marriage? There are only two options. Either indulge in self-gratification or have illicit affairs.
Masturbation is a substitute for sexual intercourse. The difference is masturbation is entirely self-oriented whereas sexual intercourse is a shared experience with an objective of mutual pleasure, emotional satisfaction or procreation.
