Mobile number for secure login
Post hacking of LinkedIn, a networking site for professionals, looks like social networking giant Facebook is tightening its noose. According to Daily Mail, Facebook has asked its more than 900 million users to provide their mobile numbers for secure account recovery.
We asked Facebook users if they would be open to sharing their numbers for security reasons, or would it deter them?
According to Prateek Shah, Green Smyles, “Sharing a phone number with a third party is always risky, but in this particular case, it will prevent our accounts from being hacked and other security compromises in the future. So, at the cost of taking a small risk, one should feel comfortable in sharing their number.”
However, as they say, once an information is leaked on the Web, it’s probably there for a lifetime. Blogger Tikuli opines, “I saw the message on my Facebook wall but I skipped it for now. I think it should be made optional. I won’t feel comfortable sharing my phone number on Facebook. No data whatsoever is safe online. Facebook changes its policies every second day. I don’t trust it. Even the phone system isn’t secure.”
But computer security expert Ankit Fadia allays all fears about sharing mobile number on Facebook and says, “I have shared my number on Facebook, and have opted for two-step verification option by Gmail. It’s an advantage if your account is hacked, you can recover it. The user can hide the public viewing option so it remains hidden.”
