Mini break wrecks fun
Winter break is round the corner in Delhi University, but students are not happy. The break has been cut short by six to eight days, thanks to the semester system. And with University exams set to start soon after the break, the revelry of previous years has been replaced by heavy-duty studying. It’s tough to find time for both partying and preparing for exams, says students.
No time for family fun!
The winter break will be from December 25 to January 2, with exams for Commerce and Science courses commencing from January 4. This leaves little room for fun isn’t it? “I was expecting the winter break to last at least two weeks. But now we have exams soon after the vacations so I’ll be studying in my winter break. My family and I were planning to go abroad for some time and then attend a family wedding. But now I’ll have to miss out on both,” says Sonali Gupta, a Chemistry (Hons) student of Hansraj College.

Many students will now have to alter their New Year Eve plans. “I have my exam on January 4 and there’s no way I can celebrate on New Year’s eve. Even if I go to a party, I will need to come back early. My friends had planned a Shimla trip but we’ll have to cancel our plans. This year we’ll be studying on New Year’s eve when the rest of the world will be partying. We are planning a small party at a friend’s place,” quips Lohit Kumar, a commerce student of Deen Dayal Upadhyay College.
Final year students who had planned a yearend get-together with their college gang are determined to stick to their plans. Monica Nathani, a B.Com (Hons) student tells us, “This would be the last New Year’s eve with my college friends, so there’s no way we’re missing out on this one. I just have to figure out how to convince my parents. These vacations are like preparatory holidays given to schoolkids.”

For outstation students, who had planned to pack their bags to leave for their hometown, the new schedule has aborted their plans too. “I planned to see my parents in these vacations but I won’t be able to go. First there was chaos on the semester system and there were no classes. So there’s a lot of syllabus to catch up on. We have classes starting soon after exams so I really don’t know if I’ll be going to see my parents on New Year. I might just call them over for a day or two,” says 19-year-old Rohit Kapoor.
