Metro to Gurgaon could mean no cabs back home
Soon commuters would be able to have a traffic-free ride to Gurgaon. On the eve of Delhi Metro’s inception in Gurgaon, a lot of corporations are thinking of stopping the cab services they offer to their employees minimising the use of private vehicles and thus decongesting the bumper-to-bumper traffic. May sound relieving to those who
crib about the dubious traffic and those who hate commuting long hours in their office cabs, however, there is a flipside to it. Employees who work graveyard shifts in Gurgaon’s numerous IT firms are apprehensive about this move for if the cab services are done away with, how would they go back home after their shifts get over?
“Metro won’t offer services late night, so how would one go back home after a graveyard shift? I feel, firms should also rethink about how their employees would reach home after de-boarding Metro,” says Debo P. Goswami, team leader of JPM Global services.
However, Arun Kumar, assistant manager of IT company Mindspace feels the move would be helpful. “Firstly, it would improve punctuality of employees, as Metro is time bound. But as far as comfort of getting picked up from one’s doorstep is concerned, initially employees may find it difficult.”
Ending all speculation, Business Process Industry Association of India (BPIAI) recently said that they are in talks with DMRC to come up with a shuttle service for employees working in Gurgaon to commute from Metro stations to their office and vice-versa. But security of employees in the night still remains a matter of concern. “Usually companies provide security guards in cabs for employees who travel in the night, but Metro won’t be having such exclusive services. Moreover, the distance to reach a Metro station would be a serious problem in the night especially for women,” opines Shaheema Robbani, business developer of Arvato India.
