Men are new focus of prime time
These days it’s the men who’ve come to the forefront and storytellers are trying to explore the society from a male point of view on TV. But what exactly is fuelling the change — is it boredom or the evolution of the mindset? Producer Vipul D. Shah of the recently launched Papad Pol feels it’s an amalgamation of both factors. “First there was the mythological era followed by comedy followed by saas bahu. Too much of anything leads to a craving for something different. Also people are becoming more open-minded and are receptive to newer ideas,” he says.
Until only a few years back characters like Tulsi, Parvati, Gauri and Prerna were household icons. With serials like Chand Chhupa Badal Mein and Sajan Re Jhooth Mat Bolo, to name a few, viewers are getting to see more of a caring father, an extroverted college guy or a romantic lover. “The change was inevitable,” says Hiten Tejwani, who was a much popular face in many TV shows.
