Memories virtually intact
Perhaps one of the most gratifying compliments a musician can get is recognition after death. Mexican singer Selena Quintilla-Perez is one such artiste who’s work strikes a chord to this day. So much so, she has been
awarded the Digital Download Artist of the Year by the Billboard Mexican Music Awards. It has been 16 years since her death but Selena continues to dominate the world of music.
Selena was much loved and appreciated for her music. The Queen of Tejano, as she was fondly called died tragically, days before her 24th birthday. She was shot at by Salvidar, the president of her fan club. Often compared to the iconic Madonna, Selena music was a hit across different age groups. She has bagged several awards including the Grammys.
Musicians believe that the tragic deaths of many artistes actually results in record breaking sales of their songs. Chintan Chinappa, of Inner Sanctum says, “Music websites are a boon for lesser known artistes. Even those who are famous, become eternal after a tragic end. Musicians like Randy Rhodes, Cliff Burton and Dimebag Darell (of band Pantera) became more popular after they died.”
Selena’s songs remain evergreen even as youngsters tune into her music. Ratheesh M, a sales consultant says, “I was just browsing the Net and happened to come across Selena’s fan page. I was blown by her voice! I plan on watching the movie inspired by her.”
