Marvellous play of words
After reading Night Circus, I was thoroughly enchanted by the magical world that Erin Morgenstern described; everything suddenly seemed ordinary in comparison. I needed a worthy pause, before I could plunge into whatever the new day would offer. Helpless, I found myself drawn back to a familiar url — www.wordgames.com.
The dismissively labelled tab “typing” led me to “Letter Scramble”. The laminated desktop has a keyboard pushed out of the way to make space for play. On the top left and right corners, are time and score displays. When play begins, tiny letters appear on your desktop. As you type in words and submit them, the letters you just used disappear from the table.
The longer the word, the higher the score. As the letters flooded in, my first instinct was to quickly form words and keep my desk clean. Wrong approach! Soak in the letters. Let the clutter build. Sift the alphabets in your mind, creating and discarding possible words. Then take the plunge, type and submit that really long word. It’s easier said than done. Wait too long and you’ll lose your train of thought, time and points. There were rounds when the clutter was overwhelming, and others when the longest words formed effortlessly.
