Marital life on stage for Das
With lights fading in and out, two forms, somewhat visible, on the stage are bickering...
Real life couple Nandita Das and Subodh Maskara is ready to test the boundaries of marriage in Das’ directorial theatre debut, Between the Lines — a marital drama partly based on their marriage.
The play will be staged in the capital on October 20 as a part of the Old World Theatre Festival.
Das shares, “My play is the debut of Chhoti Productions, a company my husband and I have recently started. We aim to tell compelling, small stories using different creative mediums with an emphasis on film and theatre.”
Explaining the central idea of the play, Das says, “It is set in urban India, where well-educated, affluent couples find themselves caught between modernity and tradition.”
What response does she expect from Dilliwalas? “Expectations are high. I am very attached to Delhi as I started my career from Delhi University. I have lots of friends in Delhi waiting for my play. We have drawn parallels from real life to create a play that will resonate with a lot of people.”
How does her son, Vivaan, react on seeing his parents arguing on stage? Says the mother, “We avoid doing the marital bickering scenes in front of him. He is too small to understand what’s going on! When he is around, I want to so cuddle him that I get distracted!”
