Many hats, one head

Anjhula Mya Singh Bais is a lot of things at once. An international super model, actor, psychologist, social activist, Buddhist practitioner and blogger for various publications. When asked how she manages it all, she says, “I do things that fascinate me; things I know will create value and that speak to me. Rumi, the Sufi Mystic said ‘let yourself be silently drawn by the strange pull of what you really love, it will not lead you astray’.
She has walked the international ramp for numerous fashion weeks in New York, London, Hong Kong, Singapore and other cities. She was India’s first Miss Teen and has been foraying into modelling, acting and theatre for many years now. She also works for Bais- Selvanathan Foundation against corruption. She says, “It’s something that I have started with my husband. The foundation is aimed at corrective and supportive action for a host of anti-corruption activities and pro-humanity endeavours. Our fund was the first to offer to pay all the legal/medical fees for the Delhi Nirbhaya Rape case until the government took over.”
Anjhula is also pursuing a course from The Chicago School of Professional Psychology. Her idea of a holiday is far from usual. “The idea of a margarita sipping beach holiday is foreign to me. My favourite holiday was going to Myanmar. Aung San Suu Kyi, the freedom fighter is a personal hero of mine. To see her country, to understand the history, to truly resonate with her principles in real time was refreshing.”
She aspires to work for the United Nations someday or work as a future director at Human Rights Watch. “I see myself combining psychology and media in an unchartered, magical way. My industry requires a respect of visceral age; I plan to retire whilst on top and hang my Jimmy Choos with grace in a couple of years. Any subsequent modelling/ acting endorsements and assignments will see all the fees being donated to charity. My goal is to inspire one person at a time,” she says.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
