Man-nerisms get a rustic touch

Gone are the days when men preferred everything “prim and proper,” the latest rage in men’s dressing is inspired by rustic and unconventional fashion choices. Many youngsters in the city can be seen emulating the Haryanvi-speaking Imran Khan character from the recently released Matru ki Bijli ka Mandola.

The style statements are no longer restricted to ironed shirts and trousers with smart belts, as men are going for more casual look —a kurta with folded sleeves and a sleeveless jacket over it teamed with experimental accessories.
According to designer Samanth Chauhan, this style is just an extension of real life. “This look was always there, just that it has come into notice now through popularity of mainstream rustic characters. Thanks to the kind of cinema we have today, more realistic styles are getting highlighted. Matru look is surely a style statement. I personally like it and I believe it will get more patrons as it is an affordable trend,” says Samanth.
Designer Jai says the Matru look is already a hit among young fans. “I have been reading about how younger generation is following this trend. Imran is looking cool in his Pathani look. Generally, you see people wearing white kurtas, but the stylist has added colour in Matru’s collection, and it is nice and different. When Rockstar was released, Ranbir was styled in a very unconventional manner with pleated salwars and long kurtas. Though the look was different, it gained steam among his fans. Imran is given a more subdued look but it’s equally wacky when coupled with unshaven face and accessories like his sunglasses. It shows a macho image. It’s a nice blend of modern and traditional.”
Besides the look, Matru’s style of speaking is a big hit too. Conversations are getting a Haryanvi touch with a typical accent, mentions Pranav Khurana of Hans Raj College. He says, “Earlier it was just the students hailing from Haryana who used to talk in Haryanvi, but now many others are endorsing the language.”
Mariyam Siddiqui, a student of Hindu College, says, “The Matru look is a huge hit. Come to the nearest Metro station and you’ll find many Matrus emerging from the trains. Leather jackets or sadris on top of kurta is the new trend these days. And, not to miss those Ray Ban glasses which were considered to be a sign of class once.”

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
