For someone, who didn’t particularly fancy acting in movies, Prakash Belawadi has landed himself quite a role. The theatre virtuoso says he is bewildered with all the attention he is getting after his film, Madras Cafe hit the cinemas. Though now it’s a known fact about what made him decide to give the movie a shot, “The mind-blowing description of the character and scenes,” he confesses, adding, “My phone has been ringing non-stop.” Though he got several offers earlier too, he confesses that he was embarrassed about taking them up.
So challenge number one for Prakash was speaking in Hindi. “My Hindi is horrible and I had asked the team to send me the script in advance so that I could practice it. But the script kept changing. So much so for the practice,” he reveals adding that he feels the film is a breakthrough in Indian cinema. “It is one of those movies which belongs to the new-age cinema and not Bollywood. I hate the word Bollywood,” he opines.
Incidentally, his wife wept when she saw the film. “She could not believe that I was part of such a big project. My elder daughter too loved the film but got a little awkward with the bedroom scene,” says the man who plays John Abraham’s hard drinking senior in the film.
Speaking of John, Prakash is all praise for the actor. “He is a very warm person. On the first day, after the shoot, he came up to me and said, ‘The cast of this film is one of its USPs and it’s great to have you here’ and even hugged me,” he concludes.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
