Delhi-based filmmaker Madhureeta Anand is going to Cannes with the promos of her film Kajarya, which focuses on gender issues.

Talking about Delhi emerging as the next film city, she says, “Delhi is a vibrant city and there are many new things happening here all the time. The city also has so many varied locations and lovely changing seasons. All this makes it a good destination for filming. And of late many filmmakers and writers are originally from Delhi. This also means that they write films about the city they grew up in.”
Madhureeta is encouraged by the new upcoming female filmmakers who are working on interesting subjects and themes through their films. She says, “For too long there has been a male-dominated viewpoint in the scripts and films. When women make films they intrinsically look at a film differently. They bring stories and styles from the ‘other side’,” she says.
“Like my film Kajarya is the story of women in India and their dilemmas. And in present times, this is an extremely important topic. We have to and must address the issues of women through art and culture. I have told the story as honestly as possible,” she adds.
Madhureeta says she has worked with debutante actors and realised why more and more filmmakers are choosing to work with new actors. “They come without any baggage and are willing to work hard. As a director one then has the pleasure of moulding a performance and pushing the actors to their limit so that they become the characters that one wrote. And these sincere performances seem to be resonating with the audiences because almost all films with new star casts have done extremely well at the box office in the past two years,” she remarks.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
