Made in India, with pride
Foreign wines are great, but the ones made in India with foreign expertise and know-how are better.
Fratelli wines, an Indo-Italian venture, are a fine example. Their new range of the ruby-red Cabernet Franc Shiraz, which blends 50 per cent Cabernet Franc and 50 per cent Shiraz, offers a pleasing taste of ripe dark fruits and berries.
Starting out robust, this elegant red balances out the tannins before fading into a fruit-lined finish.
Sangiovese is another Fratelli favourite. Boasting of a bright, clear robe, cherries, violets and a hint of spice, Sangiovese is a refined taste from the first sip. The wine is crisp, medium-bodied with delicate tannins and has a lingering spicy-fruity aftertaste. It blends well with rich dishes and is a must have on Sundays with my lunch of Goan prawn curry and rice. It makes for a great pairing with risotto too.
A matter of pride is that Fratelli Wines are located in Akluj, about 170 kms south of Pune, and are world-class. The viticultural and wine-making expertise has been provided by Piero Masi, a master wine-maker from Tuscany.
Riona wines also combine the cultures of Italy and India, bottled at the Riona winery in Sangli, Maharashtra. The chief wine maker at Terre Cortesi Moncaro Dr Giuliano D’gnazi is assisting Dr Rajesh Rasal. This Italian range of wines from the Marche region is incredible: Sample the Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi, Tordiruta and IGT wines like Elianto, Cabernet Savignon, Chardonnay, Merlot, Montepulciano.
With this launch, wine aficionados can finally enjoy the taste of vintage quality Italian wines right here in India. And their popularity is soaring. More power to such ventures.
