‘Luxury is way too overrated’

Daughter of veteran actress Maya Alagh, Anjori has set out to redefine luxury. The starlet, who recently turned entrepreneur, aims to bring luxury to humble homes with her latest online home décor store, House Proud. At a time when the world is moving online it only seems like the best thing to do, she says.

“The world is shopping online. While clothes and accessories have a huge online market, home décor is still at a nascent stage. I want to change that,” she says. But that’s not the only thing she wishes to alter. Anjori believes that the word luxury is far too overrated and given a choice would like to change the way it is perceived.
“Luxury is not necessarily expensive. People have a notion that luxury products cost the Earth but that’s not true. It is basically something that is unique and one of a kind. Something that has a novelty factor and is of very high quality. I want it to stop being the prerogative of the rich, because honestly everybody deserves a bit of the good life,” she says.
Having dabbled in the field of acting with Life Mein Kabhi Kabhi and 1920, Anjori believes she has found her true calling. “I did films because it seemed like the best thing to do then. But I have realised that my interest lies in interior designing and I am sticking to it,” she says.
She’s not alone in the venture. Her sister Sanvari and mother are a part of it too. “My mother may not always be around to manage the store, but she's always giving us a suggestions and support. Working with family is fun because you have inputs from three women with completely different choices. My mother's taste is classy and elegant while my sister's taste is much more stylish and fabulous. I on the other hand like modern and minimalist stuff,” she says.
There’s also a fourth woman who contributes to it — Suzanne Roshan. The celebrity wife and owner of a luxury home store, is one of Anjori’s dear friends and business partners. “Suzanne is a dear friend but more than anything, I can vouch for the quality of her stuff. Besides, people are intimidated to enter the store of a celebrity wife. This is an ideal setting for both of us,” she says.
About her future plans she says, “I want to branch out to international destinations and make the business grow. I am not averse to doing movies either, but the role needs to be one I am totally convinced about,” she signs off.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
