Love rules filmi roost
If one had to take stock of the recent flicks in Bollywood, then it wouldn’t be hard to notice that love and romance have been floating in the air. While Aashiqui 2 and Raanjhnaa have managed to strike a chord with the audience, several others like Lootera, Two States, Ramaiya Vastavaiya and Shuddh Desi Romance are on the anvil.
After a brief lull, there is a deluge of love stories in Bollywood and they seem to be keenly awaited by the audience. From the first meeting of the protagonists, the budding romance slowly blossoming, the hurdles faced and the culmination of the journey; love covers a wide gamut of drama and feel-good emotions.
“Love stories connect with the youngsters, who constitute more than 60 per cent of our population. The whole idea of romance is very appealing right from the days of Romeo and Juliet and Heer Ranjha, where protagonists from completely different backgrounds get attracted to each other. And love stories are also great means to launch new faces,” says story and scriptwriter Sanjay Chauhan.
It is not mere coincidence that Sanjay Dutt, Sunny Deol, Ajay Devgn, known for their action prowess, to current favourite Ranbir Kapoor have all been introduced through love stories in Bollywood.
An intense love story offers tremendous scope for acting, feels actor Divyendu Sharma, who has been associated with comic roles. “It is every actor’s dream to act in a passionate love story. One gets to act, sing and dance. I feel it is difficult to go wrong with a love story. In spite of the action and comedy genres managing to pull crowds, love stories evoke emotions among the audience and even create a feeling of nostalgia of love found and lost,” puts forth Divyendu.
With social networking, internet and newer means of communication, there is ample scope to project love stories through newer means. No wonder then that filmmakers are coming up with novel love stories every now and then.
The fate of Bollywood films is often associated with the kind of response its music generates. In love stories, the role of music is pivotal. “The music of upcoming love stories like Lootera and Ramaiya Vastavaiya is already doing well. So one can expect that the films will also appeal. The charm of love stories remains strong even in an era when many relationships are all about convenience. At least, they create a feeling of utopia,” says Komal Nahta, film trade analyst.
