Lord of the Ring gets an arty tribute

While the country is still high on wrestler Sushil Kumar’s feat at the London Olympics, veteran artist Anjolie Ela Menon has celebrated his success in her artistic way.

The artist has painted Sushil in oil on mesonite, showing Sushil in an akhada with a co-wrestler. The painting titled, The Wrestler, is on display at city’s Art Alive gallery.
“You can say I was being prophetic for that moment, when during the Commonwealth Games in 2010, I first saw Sushil and immediately knew that this boy will go a long way. He is a self-made person from a village and has risen to be a global icon. Sushil is a real hero,” says the artist.
The artist who is a well-known muralist and Padma Shree awardee said that she did not meet Sushil in person for this work but she would love to meet him soon.
According to the gallery owners, the painting, with a price tag of `15 lakh is getting lot of attention from the art lovers.
“The piece is a tribute not only to the star wrestler, but to Indian sports in general. Also, what makes the work special is the way the veteran artist intreprets the traditional style of kushti and beautifully draws Sushil on the canvas,” says Sunaina Anand, owner, Art Alive gallery.
