Life takes a funny turn this weekend

Stand-up comedian and actor Vir Das claims to be a very serious man offstage. And he insists that a good comedian has to take things seriously! “Therefore, I rarely laugh when I am offstage,” says Vir even when he is all set to make the city laugh for the next three days with Weirdass Weekend starting today.

He will be doing four shows at three different locations in Delhi and NCR. And the idea is to turn the most mundane and boring things into fun, says Vir. “Be it how a bill is passed in Lok Sabha before it becomes a law or lot many other such important things that we think are very boring to learn about. We would try to present these in a funny way,” says Vir. In one of the shows he will also talk about the things that annoyed him most in year 2012.
The show has received a good response in other cities, he says. But as he is all set to make you roll over laughing, Vir agrees that there is no dearth of comedians in the market these days. “I think just being funny is not enough. A comedian should also give people something to think about. I believe the ones with some intelligence quotient to their humour go a long way,” says Vir, who always seems to be at ease while kidding. However, the actor who is busy with four new films, shooting a comedy rock band music video and will soon be leaving for a world tour says that his first non-comic stint in Tanuja Chandra’s next called Raakh is the most difficult role he has ever played. He adds, “I don’t think I have smiled in the entire film. Apart from losing eight kgs, I learnt the Bhopali dialect, and worked on body language. I believe doing serious roles is very difficult.”

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
