If Faiza Shaikh was not an artist, she would have been a brand ambassador for Dolce and Gabanna.

She is a stylish fashionista, socialite, artist, wife, mother of three, home-maker. All roles rolled into one. And wonderful at each. How does she do it?
“Passion”, she says nonchalantly when I ask her. Faiza is passionate about life. And everything that it offers. And art is the perfect release.
“I’ve been painting for as long as I can remember. I think painting is a journey that evolves as you experience life.”
Being born a Muslim how can she can understand the subtle nuances of Hinduism and translate it on to canvas. Her most vivid works are on Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Krishna. “I paint the philosophy I meditate upon. I use texts from various philosophies to represent the universality of their ideas.”
She speaks boldly about all religions conveying the same message. “My journey has exposed me to a variety of philosophical thoughts. I aspire for ultimate enlightenment and attempt to share this aspiration through my work”.
Her personal philosophy? She is an on-looker and an observer, detached but optimistic. Her icon is Pablo Picasso. She paints for an intelligent viewer.
“Unless each painting is better than the previous one, it is not complete. I hope I’m able to fulfill this aspiration as the future unfolds. Each painting is a part of my soul. I hope that it is special for others too”.
When asked about her client list, “My paintings grace the walls of many famous people around the world including established art collectors and galleries”, is her reply.
Faiza is a suave woman who wears Gucci harem pants and Cavalli kaftans and Loubotin heels. “Fashion is a passion. I enjoy picking up pieces from a selection of couture labels and putting them together to suit my mood. Among my favourites are Dolce and Gabbana, Cavalli, Matthew Williamson. And Hermes scarves are my favourite”.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
