Kids script shot stories

A new dream is capturing the young minds of Salaam Baalak Trust shelter kids. After a weeklong photography workshop with well-known photographer Enrico Bossan, an exhibition of photographs Look On The Bright Side by 12 kids from the trust is being held at United Colors of Benetton store, Connaught Place.

“The workshop, organised by Unhate Foundation in association with the trust in May, aimed to stimulate street children’s artistic expression. The experience has given children an opportunity to express themselves through photography,” says Tanya Alag, coordinator-resource mobilisation, Salaam Baalak Trust, an organisation working for abandoned street children.
The central theme of the workshop was life on street and in shelters. Children, who had volunteered to participate, says Tanya, were able to learn not just the technical rudiments of photography, but also captured various aspects of their lives and conditions of people living in the most degraded neighbourhoods.
And it has been the most memorable learning experience, says a bit shy but proud young photographer, Tina Sharma. “Whenever we would go out to photograph people on the street, I used to feel very shy to ask people to pose. So I would just click them from behind. But Enrico noticed and encouraged me to get permission from people to click their faces,” says Tina, a class IX student.
While Tina is pleased with the faces she finally managed to click, Jagan Nath, a class XI student, says that he might take up photography as a profession. And so agree his friends who say that he has taken some the best photos, about four of which are on display at the exhibition. “I had never even touched the camera before. But when I clicked the photos, I realised the importance of capturing a single moment,” he says.
Mariarosa Cutillo, chief executive officer, Unhate Foundation, says, “The workshop and exhibition is a way to make their future prospects brighter,” she adds.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
