Kalmadi’s dementia triggers online flurry

After the reports claiming that Suresh Kalmadi, former Commonwealth Games Organising Committee chairman, is suffering from dementia (a disease related to memory loss) came out, there is non-stop action in the virtual world. People are shocked to learn that after Kalmadi’s stint in Tihar jail and his involvement in the great Indian CWG scam, he is excusing himself from the trials on the grounds of memory loss.

As soon as this news was out, the Twitterati were quick to express their views. Actor/director Farhan Akhtar tweeted, “Now we hear that Kalmadi may lose his memory. Given the CWG fiasco, we knew he had lost his mind. After effects I guess.” To which, director Rohan Sippy added, “If Kalmadi gets off the hook with dementia, as future precaution shouldn’t we get all ministers mandatorily tested too?”
The general public is also upset that many ministers and high-profile culprits get away easily from legal trials. Ankit Chopal, a student says, “It’s not happening for the first time, earlier Kanimozhi gave an excuse of falling ill in Tihar and now Kalmadi says he has dementia. How can they even say something so absurd? The reports can be forged, but no one cross-checks. There is a serious trial going on and a person being inspected for a scam worth crores, and all of sudden he claims to have memory loss. Is this a joke?”
Many people have also posted jokes and voiced their opinion on the irony of this episode. MTV India even posted a Gajini inspired poster, where the lead protagonist Kalmadi has scribbles all over his body. Actor Ankur Tewari posted online, “It took them so long to figure out that Kalmadi has symptoms of cerebral problems. Wonder who has issues with dementia — Him or authorities?” Even actor Ranvir Shorey took a dig and tweeted, “Vastanvi out, Yeddurappa still in, And Kalmadi: blaming his imaginary twin.”

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
