Jumpsuit goes formal
After making a consistent casual connect, jumpsuits — the all in one outfit — is redesigning its story in a classy format. With statement defining style and a fillip from fashion A-listers, it has been an upward climb on the trend chart.
A global fashion tour brings to our notice, a silk black panelled jumpsuit with metal belts by Jason Wu, Diane von Furstenberg highlights the reformed version in hippie chic bohemian look, Valentino brings the formal effect in a black and white monochrome, flaunting off-shoulders and narrow cuts. Picking the trend, glamour girls Victoria Beckham and Jennifer Lopez are endorsing them on a formal tone. Now that makes us ponder, can jumpsuits replace the gown as the darling of the red carpet?
Designer Urvashi Kaur quite likes the idea. She underlines the innovative ways jumpsuits can make a grand entry into the glamorous bastion of evening wear. “I see Stella Mc Cartney’s wrapped jumpsuit as something which is bold and stark in colour, it immediately draws attention. Expanding the options, both the wide and narrow legged ones are equally making a fashionable impact. Add a gorgeous belt in white or gold and play around with different monochromes. Accessories hold the key here. Create a little more drama and get more dressy, with a wide cowl, remember you need to keep the skin show up to subtle limits. Opt for a wedge and let the jumpsuit touch the floor, it creates the illusion of length. Metal detailing is the route to an absolutely gorgeous show.â€
The Delhi-based designer prescribes the balance mantra. She says, “Make sure the colours do not go too bold, as jumpsuit itself is a bold statement. Dark grey, burgundy, evening blues are safe bets. If your eyes are set on a bold colour then don’t resist the urge, simply go sans accessories except for a clutch.â€
Designer Payal Jain is considering the flared till the hem ones as ‘in’ at the moment. “A simple jumpsuit can be transformed to diva-esque heights with the right footwear and accessories. Go for sky high pumps if wearing flared hem jumpsuit. If you are wearing single coloured jumpsuits, then you can opt for printed or sequinned shoes and oversized clutch. Accessorise these gorgeous one-pieces with statement jewellery like cocktail rings, drop earrings. You may even opt for chunky necklaces. Add your touch to the jumpsuit, if you like scarves or hats, try incorporating them with your outfit.â€
According to designer duo Prasansha Saha and Ashish Tagra of the label Aharin, “Long sleek silhouettes, silky fabrics, fluidity, softness, loose cuts, plunging necklines, bare backs, halter-necks, long sleeves, prints, solid colours are all in fashion for a jumpsuit. A short jacket and an antique neckpiece or a big bold earring combined with a jumpsuit in Ikat and jacquard prints will be a perfect outfit for an evening wear.â€
To that Ashish adds, “A jumpsuit, combined with the right accessory or with perfect styling, is perfect to make you walk tall on the red carpet.â€
