Is it Time for a Smartwatch?
With the rapid iterations of technology and hardware pushing the limits of size and performance, it was inevitable that the technological progress would put pressure on product progress as well. Apple invented a new electronic segment — the tablet, and dominated it.
Now other companies are trying the same trick- after all, if people fell hook, line and sinker for an oversized touchscreen, imagine the kind of demand for a product that is completely different from its competition in the market.
Both the hardware giants — Apple and Samsung, are rumoured to be working on next generation smartwatches tentatively titled the iWatch and the Galaxy Gear, along with HOTWatch, a project on Kickstarter that has been drawing a massive amount of funding and attention. The HOTWatch is designed to be a smartphone accessory, a smartwatch which is constantly being synchronised with your phone, and can be used to perform many basic operations such as using apps and making calls.
It also invokes several different applications and functionalities by using a gesture detection system and a voice activated digital assistant along the lines of Apple’s Siri system. If not the product itself, the popularity of the HOTWatch concept on Kickstarter could have acted as a signal to the big players to ramp up the production of their own smartwatches.
The latest rumours seem to believe that Samsung is going to be the first to launch its SmartWatch on the market be on the lookout for the launch in early September.
