‘Indo-Pak series is healthiest form of rivalry’

The limelight loves Sania Mirza. Be it for her game or her fashion statement. The nose ring she sported became a nationwide rage early in her career. So did her skirt length. Recently, when tennis champ Sania Mirza walked the ramp at the Blender’s Pride Fashion Tour, she turned many heads.

She is not new to the ramp and has always loved dressing up.
In the capital, to launch Boriya Mazumdar’s book, Cooking On The Run, she says, “I’m a 25-year-old girl, almost 26 in a week (winks), and as a young girl I too like other girls like to look nice. Fashion for me is something that makes me look good and feel comfortable. I don’t really always wear branded stuff. I even pick up stuff off the street.” Sania adds that if a girl doesn’t want to look good, there’s something wrong with her.
She enjoys the attention that she gets. She likes it when she gets messages from fans for playing well, or gets blessings from fans to stay in good health. The constant media glare, she says, is a part of her life now and she has learnt to manage it well.
“Everything has pros and cons. I feel good when people are so concerned about me. But as you reach the top, your private life goes for a toss. People want to know everything that you do. It’s because of this that I mostly prefer to stay at home. Even if I go somewhere, I prefer to go to my friends’ place, where I’m not under constant media glare, says Sania.
With Diwali around the corner and considering the fact that she is on a three-week break, she is really looking forward to it. “It’s after a long time that I’ll be home during Diwali. I am looking forward to the festivity in Hyderabad. I’ll spend some quality time with my family and friends, have mithais and attend parties. Unfortunately, my husband is not going to be there as he is playing in Pakistan,” she says.
Another thing she is looking forward to is the much in news India-Pakistan cricket series in December. Though she won’t be going to watch all the matches, as she has her tournaments too; she will try to go for a few of them. However, she doesn’t want to answer questions about who she will be supporting. She says her obvious choice is India. Post her marriage to Pakistani cricketer Shoaib Malik, Sania has had to face such queries time and again.
Prod her a little more about the upcoming series and she says, “India-Pakistan matches are always interesting. Even when they play a practice match, it comes on TV and people watch it eagerly. I think it’s the healthiest form of rivalry that has existed.”

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
