The incredible dancing diva
Wowing everyone with her sexy moves — India’s well-known contemporary dancer Shakti Mohan has gone on to prove her mettle by winning many a national dancing competition. The next natural progression was going international.
Little did she know that BBC would be knocking at her door to be a part of the channel’s Collaboration Culture series.
Contemporary dancing:
I wanted to become a civil servant but my passion for dance was stronger and I pursued it. I am a trained classical Bharathnatyam dancer; taking up contemporary was a personal choice. The training under Terence Lewis and my participation in Dance India Dance provided a platform to showcase my talent.
Collaborations with Fairouz:
I was moving to New York as I wanted to study at the Broadway Centre. And I got a call from BBC, they wanted me to collaborate with Arab-American classical composer Mohammed Fairouz. I was happy that I was considered and I took it up. It was a wonderful experience and I will cherish it forever.
Nritya Shakti:
This year’s theme for our calendar is ‘Dancing with Gods.’ Ace fashion photographer Suresh Natarajan will be shooting for the calendar.
Future projects:
To be on stage you need to be a complete package — be able to dance and act, and acting is something I learnt when I was in New York. I am up for any challenge that comes my way. I have also made a video with my sisters — Mukti has penned the lyrics, my elder sister Neeti has lent her voice and I am starring in the video.
