He began his career by singing for Oh My God’s Go Go Go Govinda and today playback singer Aman Trikha, who has already delivered five back-to-back superhits in one year, has proved that he has got what it takes to make a mark in the world of music.
“My real passion for music began when my dad gifted me a keyboard at the age of five. I always knew that I would either grow up to be a musician or a cricketer as I am passionate about both,” says Trikha.
With no musical background, it was the discovery of his mellifluous voice by a fellow classmate in college, that led him to Bollywood. An engineering student, Trikha ventured to sing publicly for the first time at the annual college fest, where he was appreciated for his talent.
“It actually began with me humming in class. My classmate thought I had an amazing voice and asked me to begin singing. So I gave it a shot and decided to make it my career. My parents asked me to finish my engineering course before taking up anything else. Meanwhile, I began training under Ustad Maqbool Hussain Khan from the Rampur Sahaswan gharana,” he continues. Trikha decided to take part in the Indian Idol show, but was eliminated in the first three seasons.
“I was very disappointed. However, I was selected by Anu Malik, Sunidhi Chauhan and Salim Merchant for the fifth season. I believe that was the turning point in my career. I went on to be a part of the top-15 finalists, after which I was eliminated since some contestants had important and well-placed contacts,” he continues.
Soon after that he participated in Sur Kshetra and won the contest. He soon entered Bollywood, and after a few hitches in the beginning, there has been no looking back. “Now I have so many films lined up. I have Ek Saath Tera, Ranveer the Marshal and a few regional films as well.”

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
