‘I have always been a fighter’

Gulabo Sapera, a Kalbelia dancer from Rajasthan, went inside the Bigg Boss house enthusiastically as she saw the show as a platform to spread awareness about her work for women of her community. But she was disappointed with the environment inside the house.

Gulabo, who was evicted from the house this Friday, says that she hadn’t seen the previous seasons of the show and was unaware of how the game functions. Her participation was only confirmed two months back while she was in Denmark for a performance. The only idea she had about the show was from some video clippings she saw on the mobile.
“Agar main janti ki log yahan par aise hote hain toh main bhi kuchh tayari karke aati. Everyone inside the house is clever and gossips about every other person,” she says, adding that although she is not a two-faced person but for the sake of staying inside the house she could have been more clever.
But even after being evicted (she is not too sure about the reasons behind it), she has not lost hope. Gulabo says she would like to return to the house with a wild card entry.
“I was there for a reason. I want to educate the women of my community, start a school for them with the amount I win. So what if I’ve been evicted, I have not lost hope,” she firmly says.
Gulabo says that she was born in a community where a girl child was unwanted and in her growing years she faced enough problems and overcame them. “I’ve been a fighter all my life and I’m ready to do that even now. I was just not prepared for this kind of environment in the house. But now when I go in, I’ll make sure I have a strategy to be there for the longest time,” she says.
Gulabo was hurt when co-contestant Mandeep Bevli said that she would have to wash her clothes in antiseptic if Gulabo touched them. “I was really offended with such a comment. Mujhe samajh nahi aata ki woh bolna kya chahti thi. Sirf woh nahi, baki log bhi aise hi hain… saamne kuch aur peechhe kuchh aur. I just fail to understand the people inside the house,” she says.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
