‘I feel like a world citizen’

She is best known for her role as Michelle McNally in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s larger than life production, Black. An image that will probably stay with the actress for the longest time, thanks to the life she infused in it. But look at her seven years down that line, and she bears only a hint of Michelle.

A teenaged actress turned entrepreneur, Ayesha Kapur has come a long way from being the little girl who lit up the screen.
She is currently in Mumbai to pick up the nuances of filmmaking and training under actor, Sanjay Suri. “I have always been enchanted by films. Acting is a passion and always will be, but I also want to try my hand at all the other aspects of filmmaking,” says the actress who is completing her high school studies in the US.
Brought up in the dreamy township of Auroville in Pondicherry, Ayesha believes that whichever part of the world she goes to, Auroville will always be her home. “That is where I grew up and that’s where my world is. It will always be my home,” she says. While it is natural for most people to be emotional about their hometown, Ayesha believes there is something magical about hers.
“I have grown up in India and am an Indian at heart, but thanks to the global nature of Auroville, I always felt like a world citizen. My best friends as a child were from Italy, Japan, India of course and many other places. I started riding a horse at the age of three, something not many children have the privilege of doing. Auroville made me grow into a global citizen,” says Ayesha who has German roots. “My mother is German and I am in touch in with that side of my heritage too and I often visit my grandma in Germany,” she adds.
A young fashionista, Ayesha has recently started a chain of accessories with her parents. “My mother owns an accessory store in Pondicherry. Since I am also very keen on styling and accessorising, we came up with the idea of Ayesha accessories,” says Ayesha who seems to have inherited the entrepreneurial skills from her father, Dilip Kapur who is the owner of the hugely successful brand, Hidesign. “While my mother and I look after the styling aspect, dad pitches in for the business side of it,” she says adding, “Ayesha captures the essence of womanhood. It’s funky, stylish and can add a hint of fun that will brighten up your day.”
A multi-faceted girl, Ayesha hopes to make it big in films one day. From the looks of it, it’s only a matter of time.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
