Hunt’s on for hot addas
India’s favourite foodies Rocky and Mayur are back again on the small screen with their food show Highway On My Plate: Addas, and this time their focus is on popular school and college canteens across India.
The duo talks about their “emotional connect with food,” and how they relived their youth in this gastronomic journey of favourite eating joints.
The special food series on addas rediscovers canteens, dining halls and cafeteria across the country, informs Rocky Singh. He says, “We got many requests from our young viewers, who wrote to us about their favourite addas. We short-listed a few places and visited a few fascinating eating joints where all the action takes place. Canteens are the center of social, cultural and intellectual exchange for students, and even when they grow up they keep coming back to these places. While featuring these addas even we got nostalgic and talked about the “good ol’ days” while enjoying the delicious canteen food.”
Speaking about famous joints of Delhi, Rocky informs that both the hosts have grown up eating street food and it was a great experience to shoot here. He says, “We grew up eating the famous chhole-bhature from Chache Di Hatti, where today too students queue up to taste the specialties. When young, both of us used to hang out in the SRCC canteen which is featured in this series. We were pleasantly surprised to find that the basketball sandwich, which is a samosa tucked between bread slices and served with onion and chutney, is still popular among students. It was introduced by basketball students who were paid a certain amount to buy food, and only a samosa and sandwich would come from that money in those days.”
Back then things were simple, but today things have taken a modern avatar, feels Mayur Sharma. He says, “We featured some of the most iconic food joints of renowned educational institutions. We went to Mumbai’s HR College of Commerce, Jai Hind College, Pune, In Delhi, we covered SRCC and Hindu College. We even went to The Doon School, Welham Girls & Boys School and The Lawrence School, Sanawar. It’s a vivid mix of places that we have covered so far. In fact, we were surprised to see the amount of packaged food and drinks that are available in modern canteens. These addas are too fancy and cool; they have AC, WiFi and what not.”
Though times have changed, there are things that will never change, feels Rocky, as he adds, “Students were always hungry when we were young, and even today they are ready to eat anytime. Just like before, even today students love free food and make all sorts of excuses to hang out in the addas. I feel we are also like them and we will soon head out to discover more culinary delights in coming episodes.”
